Lock Haven, Pa. – The No. 7 Mercyhurst men's soccer team fought through a physical double-overtime match at Lock Haven, earning a 1-1 draw.
The Lakers are now 6-1-2, 1-1-2 in the PSAC West, while Lock Haven, PSAC West leaders, are 6-4-2, including 2-1-1 in PSAC West play.
Shortly after halftime, Mercyhurst committed a foul in the penalty area, resulting in a penalty kick for Lock Haven's Andrew Clemens. Clemens' strike was true, giving the Bald Eagles a 1-0 lead at 50:11.
Mercyhurst increased the offensive pressure after the Lock Haven goal, resulting in several clear chances. Nearly 20 minutes later the Lakers tied up the match, as Ryan Florian kicked in the rebound of a
Nicholas Thompson shot from in tight. The tally was Florian's first collegiate goal, assisted by Thompson.
Play was testy throughout, as nine yellow cards were distributed, seven of which came in the second half.
The score remained knotted at 1-1 during the remainder of time, forcing extra sessions to be played.
Both teams had prime opportunities throughout both overtimes, but were unable to grasp the victory due to fine saves by both keepers and near-misses. End-to-end action highlighted each extra session.
Mercyhurst held a slight 13-12 advantage in shots on goal, but was beaten in shots on goal 7-6. Lock Haven took 10 corner kicks to Mercyhurst's eight.
The Lakers are back in action Saturday, traveling to face PSAC East foe West Chester. The match begins at 4:00 p.m., following the women's match at West Chester.
