Men's Hockey's "Fantastic Four" Put Themselves In Rare Company

ERIE, Pa. - When redshirt senior Kyle Just of the Mercyhurst University men's hockey team tallied a goal and an assist in Saturday's 5-3 loss at Bentley University in game two of the Atlantic Hockey Conference quarterfinals, he became the 20th player during the Division I era at Mercyhurst to join the "100-Point Club."

What's impressive is the fact that Mercyhurst has only been a Division I member since the 1999-2000 season - this year being the program's 16th season at the Division I level. What's even more impressive is that Just became the fourth member to reach the milestone for the Lakers this season.

The "Fantastic Four" were a big part of the Lakers' two games to one victory in the quarterfinal series against the Falcons, which allowed the program to advance to the conference semifinals at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, New York, for the fourth consecutive season. Mercyhurst will square off against top-seeded, and 20th-ranked, Robert Morris, in the first semifinal contest on Friday, March 20 at 5:05 p.m.

The quartet - seniors Matthew Zay, Daniel Bahntge, Ryan Misiak, and Just - combined to score three goals and seven assists against Bentley last weekend

Since Mercyhurst joined the Division I ranks, only seven other schools in the country have had four players reach the 100-point plateau in the same season. This year, the Lakers became the first in Atlantic Hockey history to accomplish the feat.

Former league-rival Quinnipiac had four players reach the milestone last season. Prior to the Bobcats, North Dakota also had four join the club during the 2010-11 season. Minnesota accomplished the feat twice - in 2004-05 and in 2005-06, while Denver also had four players reach 100 points during the 2004-05 season. St. Cloud State had four join in 2001-02.

Michigan had five players join the club during the 2004-05 season. Current Atlantic Hockey member, Air Force, had four players join during the 2001-02 season when the Falcons were a member of the now-defunct College Hockey America men's conference.

The first member of the club this season was Zay, who entered his senior campaign with 96 points. He joined the club when he scored a goal late in the third period against Merrimack at the Mercyhurst Ice Center on October 24, which sent the game to overtime. After scoring just 14 points in 36 games as a rookie, Zay has tallied 113 points over the course of the last three seasons.

Zay, is currently tied for seventh on the school's all-time scoring list with 127 points. He is tied with Adam Tackaberry (2000-04) and Rich Hansen (2001-05) and is two points shy of tying Dave Borrelli (2002-06) for sixth on the list.

Misiak was the next to join the club, tallying a second period assist at Bentley on November 15. The lifelong forward who converted to defense after game one of the Lakers' series at Colgate on October 31, entered his senior campaign with 95 points. This season, Misiak, who scored the overtime game-winner in the Lakers' 1-0 game one victory last weekend, has seven goals and 16 assists for 23 points to give him 118 career points.

He ranks 12th on the school's all-time Division I scoring list and trails Daniel O'Donoghue (2010-14) by one point to move into a tie for 11th.

Bahntge was the third member to join this season, scoring a goal against Robert Morris on December 13. The senior, who has not missed a game in his collegiate career, leads the Lakers in scoring this season with 13 goals and 22 assists for 35 points. He entered his senior season with 91 points and now has 126 career points - 10th on the all-time Division I list. He trails Zay, Tackaberry, and Hansen by one point to move into a tie for seventh and is three points of tying Borrelli for sixth.

Just, the final member of the club, needed a career-high 32 points during his senior season to reach the milestone. Points #31 and #32 came in the third period last Saturday at Bentley. He has established career-bests in goals (12) and points (32) and is one shy of tying his record of 21 assists he set during the 2012-13 season.

He is tied for 19th on the school's all-time list with T.J. Kemp (2001-05), the only four-year defenseman in the program's D-I history to reach the milestone, with an even 100 points. He needs one point to move into a tie for 17th with Matt Pierce (2005-09) and Peter Rynshoven (2000-04).

Senior Chris Bodo, who has missed 11 games in his career (including six this season), eclipsed 90 points for his career last weekend. His goal during the Lakers' rally in game three was the 50th of his career and he enters the final four weekend with 92 career points. Senior Nardo Nagtzaam, last Sunday's hero, could also have been knocking on the door of the club had it not been for a number of injuries. He has played in just 94 career games, missing 65 due to injury, but still has amassed 68 total points. Senior defenseman Tyler Shiplo is one assist shy of 50 for his career as he has totaled 66 points.

To say the senior class has meant a great deal to the program would be an understatement. The group, which also includes Zac Frischmon, Grant Gettinger, Edward DeWald, and Jimmy Sarjeant, has totaled 290 goals and 494 assists for 784 points in their collegiate careers.

The only thing missing on their resumes is a trip to the NCAA Division I Tournament - something that has eluded the program since 2005. The Lakers can get back to the dance for the first time in ten years with two victories this weekend. It all begins on Friday, March 20, with Mercyhurst's semifinal against top-seeded Robert Morris. Faceoff from the Blue Cross Arena is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.
