2010-11: Went 8-1 before experiencing a season ending injury…Placed second at the Hokie open facing all Division I talent…took first at the National Catholic Invitational with a perfect 3-0 mark…finished sixth at the PSAC championships…opened the season ranked first in the national rankings (Dec.14) and ranked first twice in the region poll.
2009-10: Placed second at the NCAA Division II National Championships, falling 8-3 to Travis Eggers of Upper Iowa…the loss in the national championship match was the first of the year against Division II opponents as he finished with a personal-best 37-4 overall mark… the 37 victories are tied for the second-most in single-season history at Mercyhurst…won 21-straight matches prior to the title match, eclipsing his personal-best winning streak set as a sophomore... Shields was one of two Lakers selected to participate in the prestigious 47th Annual Midlands Tournament, going 2-2 against Division I talent… finished with a 19-4 mark in tournaments and a perfect 18-0 in dual meets… posted a team-best seven falls and 155.5 team points… placed in five of six tournaments, including no less than third place at each…won title honors at the Buffalo Open to start the season then followed with another title win at the National Catholic Invitational where he was named Outstanding Wrestler… took third at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championship and was the Super Region I Champion for the second-consecutive year… at the regional championships, Shields did not surrender a point as he recorded three shutouts and a fall… finished the season with 17 shutouts… was named the PSAC Wrestler of the Week on two occasions (Nov. 17, March 1)… ranked No. 1 for eight-straight regular season polls… moved into seventh-place on the all-time career list at Mercyhurst with a mark of 89-17, just 31 shy of breaking the Lakers all-time mark.
2008-09: Became the first athlete at Mercyhurst to win an individual national championship when he blanked Nebraska-Omaha’s Aaron Denson, 5-0, at 165 pounds to avenge an earlier 4-3 loss to Denson… the victory was the largest margin of victory at the 2009 NCAA II National Championships… the victory also closed out the sophomore’s season with 21-straight wins as he finished with a 29-3 overall mark, including an 18-2 dual meet mark… posted his second-straight All-America finish… earned his first regional title with his second 7-0 victory over Kyle Keane of UPJ after finishing second at 174 as a freshman… recorded 12 shutouts on the season, including his win over Denson and a 4-0 victory over then-ranked No. 2 Corey Van Groll of Wisconsin-Parkside in the national semifinals… Shields took over the nation’s No. 1 ranking on Feb. 4 after knocking off 2008 National Champion Keane with a 7-0 whitewashing before going on to a 5-0 mark at the East Coast Duals… began the season with a second-place finish at the Buffalo Open, dropping his only match to Division I Colt Sponseller of Ohio State… of his victories, he won 17 by decision, five by major decision, three by technical fall and three by fall… earned PSAC Wrestler of the Week honors on Jan. 19, 2009.
2007-08: Emerged as a top wrestler at 174 pounds during his first season of action...Became All-American with a fourth-place finish at NCAA Championships...Finished runner-up at East Region Championships...Posted a 23-10 record including a 17-3 mark in tournament action...Totaled two pins and three major decisions...Won the Simonson Invitational, placed third at the National Catholic Invitational and fourth at the Keystone Classic...Knocked off then-No. 2-ranked Chris Gibbs of West Liberty by a 4-3 decision on Nov. 29...Missed over a month of action because of an injury.
2006-07: Did not wrestle.
High School: Three-time state qualifier...2006 state runner-up...147-39 record...47 wins as a senior set school record...2006 WPIAL All-Star...team was a four-time district finalist...2004 district and WPIAL Championship team...team finished third at PIAAs in both 2005 and 2006...French Club.
