KLAGENFURT, Austria – The Mercyhurst women's hockey team is having quite the start to 2026. They were recently ranked No. 14 in the nation. They also have a few past-and-present players competing for their national teams in the Olympics and other international competitions. Regina Metzler and Hungary spent the past weekend competing for the Wörthersee Trophy in Austria with five other nations. Metzler recorded a clinical point in each of their three games as the Hungarians won the trophy.

Hungary began the tournament with a contest against Slovakia. The Hungarians were down 2-1 in the third period when Metzler set up the game-tying goal to send them to overtime. They defeated Slovakia, 3-2 in OT. In game two, the team found themselves trailing again, this time against Norway, 2-1. They tied the game at two heading into the final few minutes of regulation. With less than two minutes remaining, Metzler potted the game-winning goal to advance Hungary to the finals.

Today marked the final contest, featuring Hungary and Denmark. The Danes were on the powerplay and pulled ahead in the first three minutes of play. Hungary trailed for the remainder of the period. In the second frame, Hungary equalized in the first five minutes with a powerplay goal of their own. Moments later, Metzler set up the game-winning goal as the Hungarians defeated the Danes, 3-1. The Wörthersee trophy is their first trophy of the calendar year.

Metzler now has 31 goals and 11 assists for 42 points in the 113 games she has played for Hungary. This is for the U18 team and senior team combined. She has been representing her home country since the 2019-20 season.

For Mercyhurst this season, Metzler has seven goals and 16 goals for 23 points. She is fifth on the team in goals and fourth on team in assists and points. The Budapest native has one goal and seven assists in her last ten games. On Jan. 10, the Lakers upset No. 4 Penn State 4-3 in overtime. Here, Metzler had a hat trick of assists, including the assist on the game-winning goal. She has 13 goals and 26 assists for 39 points across both seasons of her Laker career thus far.
