BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The Mercyhurst women's basketball team edged Long Island, 58-55, with a decisive fourth-quarter performance in Brooklyn. The Lakers capitalized on nine three-pointers and forced 16 turnovers to secure the victory.

Cici Hernandez and
Jenna Van Schaik both posted 17 points in win. The Lakers (11-15, 11-4 NEC) sit just one game behind the second-place Sharks (17-9, 12-3 NEC).

The Lakers opened the game with a strong defensive presence, recording four steals while capitalizing on fast-break opportunities. Hernandez contributed significantly with a three-pointer at 2:46, and an assist to Van Schaik for a fast-break layup at 2:24. The quarter concluded with Mercyhurst leading 14-11, thanks to their efficient scoring in the paint and transition plays.

Mercyhurst gained momentum in the second quarter with a pivotal 3-pointer by
Lena Walz at 8:41, extending its lead to 19-11. Hernandez further bolstered the offense with a layup at 6:58, widening the gap. Despite LIU's attempts to close in, the Lakers maintained their advantage. The period concluded with a 3-pointer by Hernandez at the buzzer, securing a 33-25 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Lakers initially extended the gap with a 3-pointer by Van Schaik at 8:51. Despite facing pressure from LIU, the Green and Blue managed crucial stops, including blocks by Van Schaik and rebounds by
Sofia Wilson, who also contributed offensively with a layup at 4:00.

LIU narrowed the margin late in the quarter, but
Lauryn Stover's two free throws at 0:34 helped Mercyhurst secure a 44–42 lead with 10 minutes to play.

Hernandez played a pivotal role for the Lakers in the fourth quarter, contributing a crucial three-pointer at 7:55 and hitting multiple free throws to maintain the lead.

Despite a determined effort from LIU, including a tying score at 3:16, the Lakers held firm. Van Schaik's free throws with 43 seconds remaining extended the lead to five points. Mercyhurst secured a 58–55 victory, closing the game on a strong defensive note.

The Lakers close out the regular season with three consecutive home games. Central Connecticut State visits Erie Thursday, followed by Stonehill Saturday, Feb. 28 and Le Moyne March 5 for the final game of the regular season.
