SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The Mercyhurst baseball team opened up their 2026 season Friday when they fell to Wofford 12-2. The Lakers were initially up 2-1, but were unable to overcome Wofford's 11-run sixth inning.
Mercyhurst took an early lead in the second inning when Derrick Holmes reached first on a strikeout thanks to a wild pitch, advanced to third on another wild pitch, and scored on
Mike Samarin's RBI single. The Lakers led 1-0 after the second inning. In the third inning,
Dana Williams extended their lead with a solo home run, his first as a Laker.
Logan Koslin followed with a single, but Wofford managed to limit the damage and keep the deficit at one.
The game remained tight through the fifth inning, with both teams exchanging solid defensive plays. Wofford tied the game in the third but did not score again until breaking through in the sixth inning. The Terriers capitalized on a combination of hits, errors, and strategic plays to score 11 runs, taking control of the game and making the score 12-2 after the sixth inning.
In the seventh inning, Mercyhurst was unable to mount a comeback. Wofford secured the win with a final score of 12-2, overcoming the Lakers' early advantage.
Matthew Delvaux pitched four innings, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out one and walking four.
Anthony Krause, in his one inning of work, did not allow a hit but gave up four runs, two earned, with two walks and a hit batsman.
Nate Vargo faced 11 batters, giving up seven hits and seven runs, though only two were earned, and recorded one strikeout, while being charged with two balks.
Williams contributed with a home run and an RBI, showcasing his ability to score and drive in runs.
Logan Koslin delivered two hits, adding consistency to the lineup.
Mike Samarin also made an impact with a hit and an RBI, helping to advance runners. Meanwhile, Derrick Holmes crossed the plate once, adding a run to the team's total.
Tomorrow, Mercyhurst returns to action when they play Wofford in a doubleheader. Game one is at 12 p.m. and game two is at 4 p.m.
