Box Score ERIE, Pa. — Mercyhurst lost to LIU 4-2 on Friday. The Lakers scored in the second and fourth quarters and finished with 11 shots, while LIU held a 19-11 shot advantage. This was a breast cancer awareness game. Players, fans and referees wore pink, and there was a moment of silence before the game in honor of all those affected by breast cancer.
Mercyhurst goalkeeper Victoria Campana was tested early as LIU earned a penalty corner at :27 and produced four shots in the opening three minutes. Campana made a save at 2:39 to keep the game scoreless. LIU broke through at 8:15 to take a 1-0 lead. The Lakers generated a late opportunity when Hailey Hatfield put a shot on goal at 12:09 and Kailyn Smith inserted a penalty corner at 12:31, but Mercyhurst finished the quarter trailing 1-0.
The Lakers generated the first recorded chance of the second quarter, earning a penalty corner from Finja Wunner at 16:52 before Rachel Kosowski's shot was blocked at 17:00. LIU moved ahead 2-0 at 19:26 following a penalty corner. The Lakers answered at 21:02, with Lauren Hills scoring off an assist from Wunner to make it 2-1. The score remained unchanged after another Kosowski shot was blocked at 26:05 and a late LIU corner at 28:29. Hills' goal was the first of her career.
Campana handled LIU's early pressure in the third quarter, making saves to keep the Lakers within one. Mercyhurst responded with a sustained penalty-corner stretch, earning six corners between 37:03 and 41:10. LIU came back with consecutive corners at 41:55 and 42:07, but Campana kept the visitors off the scoreboard in the quarter, sending the game to the fourth with LIU ahead 2-1.
LIU struck early in the fourth quarter to extend its lead to 3-1 at 46:03. The Lakers answered at 50:12 when Kylie Kehoe finished a setup from Wunner, cutting the score to 3-2. Mercyhurst continued to battle, but LIU added another goal at 53:43 to make it 4-2 and held that advantage through the final whistle.
The Lakers are 1-8 overall and 0-4 in conference play. LIU is 2-8 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
Wunner led the Lakers with two assists and put both of her shots on goal. Hills scored and finished with two shots, one on goal, while Kehoe converted her only shot for a goal. Campana recorded seven saves in 60 minutes, including four in the third quarter.
