UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Mercyhurst men's soccer team traveled across Eastern Pennsylvania to face Penn State for the first time in program history. Penn State's offensive prowess proved to be too much as Mercyhurst fell 5-0.
In the opening minutes,
Jo Hanamoto played a through ball that found
Jalen Jackson-Tyus in stride, but the attempt was blocked.
The next 15 minutes featured back-and-forth action including some crucial clearances from
Mario Ganser.
In the 24th minute, Penn State was awarded a free kick that
Jacob Conti confidently parried away. The following sequence featured a goal line clearance from
Jared Rimmer as the Lakers' back line continued to sustain pressure.
In the 34th minute,
Sergio Sanchez launched a shot from a corner kick but could not keep it on target.
The Nittany Lions went ahead shortly after to make it 1-0 at halftime.
Right after the break, Conti stopped another promising breakaway that fired up the Lakers' bench.
Marcel Duffau sent in a corner kick in the 63rd minute, but a wall of Nittany Lions blocked Rimmer's shot.
The Lakers were able to create a few chances from
Liam Mullen,
Roman Agostoni,
Alex Chung, and Hanamoto after Penn State added to their lead.
Duffau had another free kick in the 83rd minute that narrowly went over the head of a
Amadu Bah.
Penn State defeated Mercyhurst 5-0 after full time.
The Nittany Lions won the corner kick battle 8-3.
The Lakers will travel to Philadelphia next Wednesday, Sept 10 to play Drexel.
