Drexel Outpaces Men’s Soccer in Philly

PHILADELPHIA - The Mercyhurst men's soccer team traveled back across Pennsylvania to go up against Drexel, another new opponent for the program. The Dragons netted a goal in each half to hand the Lakers a 2-0 defeat.

The first twenty minutes of the match were chaotic as neither side really possessed the ball. Mario Ganser made a pair of crucial clearances in the 7th and 17th minute followed by Jacob Conti's save in the 22nd minute. This kept things level midway through the first half.

Drexel went ahead in the 30th minute. Moments later, Sergio Sanchez found himself with some shooting space at the top of the 18, but his attempt was deflected over the bar.

In the 42nd minute, Marcel Duffau sent a free kick into the box that the Dragons' goalkeeper punched away. The score remained 1-0 at halftime.

The Lakers continued to endure pressure as the Dragons added another shortly after the second half kickoff. In the 54th minute, Ganser showed his composure again stopping a Drexel attacker in a 1v1 battle.

A few minutes later, Alvar Silva ripped a shot that clattered off the post. This was the Lakers' best chance of the afternoon so far.

Conti then made an outstretched kick save on a counterattack as both sides took a moment to catch their breath.

In the 73rd minute, Jo Hanamoto made his way into the penalty area and fired a shot that ended up blocked.

In a last-ditch effort, Alex Chung had his attempt on target blocked as Drexel had most of their players behind the ball. The final score on the afternoon was 2-0.

The Lakers held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks and recorded six shots compared to Drexel's 10.

Mercyhurst will return to action next Wednesday, Sept. 17 at Canisius.
