BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — Mercyhurst showed flashes of resilience and grit Friday afternoon, but a relentless LIU attack proved too much as the Lakers fell, 5-0, in conference play.
The Lakers opened the match with a determined defensive stance, highlighted by key stops from Goalkeeper Louise Pert and an organized back line. Mercyhurst generated chances of their own with first-quarter penalty corners from Lola Williams, but the attempts were denied by a well-positioned LIU defense.
Despite Mercyhurst's structured play, LIU found the cage late in the first and added another midway through the second. Still, the Lakers continued to press, earning consecutive corners just before halftime—this time through Ava Jones—but couldn't convert before the break.
The third quarter featured one of Pert's most impressive sequences, including a reflex save that momentarily halted the hosts' momentum. However, LIU managed to slip one past late in the frame to extend their advantage.
In the final 15 minutes, the Lakers continued to battle in their defensive circle, with Pert adding to her save total. Though the scoreline grew, Mercyhurst's refusal to fold was evident in their structure and effort through the final whistle.
Pert once again proved to be an anchor for the Lakers, turning aside nine shots in a performance that underscored her status as the NEC's leader in save percentage, total saves, and saves per game. Her composure under constant pressure helped limit the damage and kept Mercyhurst within striking distance through much of the contest.
The Lakers continue NEC play with a quick turnaround, visiting Wagner on Sunday, September 28, for a 12PM face-off.
