Lakers Wrap Up Road Trip with Loss at Wagner

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Mercyhurst field hockey team continued conference play on the road Saturday, falling to Wagner 6-0 at the Field Hockey Complex.

Mercyhurst battled through persistent offensive pressure from the Seahawks, who outshot the Lakers 24-4. Despite the final scoreline, the team showed resilience throughout the game, highlighted by strong defensive moments and key saves.

Freshman goalkeeper Rhyden Wheldon started in net and was quickly tested by Wagner's attack. The Seahawks opened the scoring early in the first quarter, but Mercyhurst responded with a scoring chance of its own as Catherine Hudak fired a shot that was blocked. Defender Delfina Magro added a defensive save late in the quarter to keep the score within reach. Wagner led 1-0 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Wagner added two more goals, despite several key stops by Wheldon, including denials on shots from close range. The Lakers continued to push forward but were unable to convert their possession into scoring opportunities. Mercyhurst trailed 3-0 at halftime.

The third quarter saw Wagner take advantage of back-to-back penalty corners to extend their lead. However, Mercyhurst generated its strongest offensive sequence of the game midway through the frame. Maddie Huffer set up a penalty corner that led to a shot on goal by Anna Muscat, which was saved by the Seahawks' keeper. Muscat followed up with another attempt shortly after, but it missed just wide. The score stood at 5-0 in favor of Wagner after three quarters.

Wheldon returned to goal in the fourth quarter and the defense tightened up, turning away several attempts and blocking multiple shots. Jen Kemp added a defensive save late in the match to prevent further damage. Offensively, Finja Wunner earned the Lakers a penalty corner, and Kemp followed with a shot on goal that was saved. The game concluded with a 6-0 win for Wagner.

Up next, the Lakers return home October 3 for their Senior Day matchup, set for a 1 p.m. start.
