STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Wagner (2-1-5, 1-0-1) secured a decisive 3-0 victory over Mercyhurst women's soccer (0-8-2, 0-1-1) at Hameline Field.
Wagner took an early lead in the match with a goal in the 8th minute, setting the pace for the first half. Mercyhurst's goalkeeper,
Annis-Clara Wright, was tested frequently, making several saves. Despite the Lakers defensive efforts, Wagner doubled their lead in the 18th minute. The Lakers struggled to gain momentum offensively, managing only one shot by
Caterina Cappiello, as the first half concluded with Wagner leading 2-0.
The second half began with Wagner extending their lead in the 50th minute, bringing the score to 3-0. The Lakers attempted to respond with a shot on goal by
Fiona Fraser in the 56th minute, but it was saved. Wagner maintained offensive pressure throughout the half with multiple shots. Despite a series of fouls from both teams, the Green and Blue were unable to capitalize on their later corner kick, concluding the half with Wagner holding a 3-0 advantage.
Wright recorded six saves in goal for the Lakers, facing 18 shots in a challenging matchup. Fraser managed a shot on goal, contributing to the team's offensive efforts. Cappiello added one shot, keeping the pressure on the opposing defense.
The Lakers will take on Howard next Sunday Sept. 28 at home.
