BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — Mercyhurst women's soccer (0-7-2, 0-0-1) and LIU (2-2-3, 0-0-1) played to a 2-2 draw, with both teams netting their goals in separate halves at the LIU Soccer Park.
The first half began with Mercyhurst asserting early pressure, as
Meredith Swenson recorded two shots within the opening three minutes. The Lakers took the lead in the 8th minute when
Caterina Cappiello found the back of the net, making it 1-0. Freshman
Annis-Clara Wright made her first career start with the Lakers, making one save. The Green and Blue headed to the break with a one-goal advantage.
The second half commenced with a series of defensive efforts from Mercyhurst. LIU found an opening in the 53rd minute, leveling the score. Wright came up big in the 65th minute and again in the 85th minute, saving a breakaway to keep the tie.
Taylor Beachy scored her first career goal in the 85th minute, assisted by
Mia Maruna, granting them a temporary lead. However, LIU quickly equalized with a penalty kick in the 87th minute, concluding the half in a tense 2-2 draw.
Wright recorded seven saves against 17 shots faced in 90 minutes of action. Cappiello scored her second career goal with the Lakers. Beachy contributed offensively by scoring once with her only shot on goal.
Madison Sievering led the team's offensive efforts with five shots, three of which were on goal.
The Lakers will end their five game road trip at Wagner in their second NEC match up of the season.
