Duffau’s Early Goal Not Enough as Men’s Soccer Falls to Canisius

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Canisius secured a 3-1 victory over Mercyhurst at the Demske Sports Complex, with all four goals coming in the first half.

The first half began with Mercyhurst taking an early lead as Marcel Duffau found the net in the 14th minute, marking his first goal of the season, following a flurry of early attempts. The Lakers' attacking efforts were persistent, with Sergio Sanchez hitting the crossbar and Ben Conti's shot being blocked. Canisius then dominated the remaining 15 minutes of the first half by scoring three unanswered goals including a penalty, and ending the half at 3-1.

The second half began with the Green and Blue pressing forward, as Nako Amare attempted an early shot in the 48th minute, followed by Alvar Silva's effort in the 51st that narrowly missed the frame. Despite consistent pressure and multiple corner kicks, including those in the 73rd and 87th minute, the Lakers were unable to find the back of the net. Additionally, the Canisius goalkeeper made crucial saves against Aiden Williams McCracken and Santiago Giraldo. The half was marked by physical play, with several fouls committed by both teams, ultimately resulting in a scoreless half and a final score of 3-1 in favor of Canisius (2-3-1).

The next challenge for Mercyhurst comes as they play Pitt on Sept. 22 at 7:00 p.m.
