ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y.- The Mercyhurst men's soccer team played their second of eight consecutive away matches this Sunday afternoon. The Lakers defense remained composed throughout the match after going down to nine men.
Jacob Conti made seven saves in a 0-0 draw.
In the opening minutes, St. Bonaventure (1-2-1) made their way into Mercyhurst's penalty area.
Ethan Aler quickly stopped the attack with a crunching slide tackle.
Shortly after, in the eighth minute,
Nako Amare unleashed a burst of pace and sent a cross into the box that barely missed one of the Laker attackers.
In the 10th minute, the Bonnies had one of their counterattacks stopped by
Mario Ganser who earned the game's first booking.
The first shot of the match did not come until the 19th minute when
Santiago Giraldo fired one over the bar.
The Bonnies continued to put the Lakers under pressure, but back-to-back blocked shots kept the game at a deadlock.
In the 27
th minute, a composed Aler blocked another shot as the Lakers caught their breath.
Conti continued to protect his goal as he made a fully stretched save in the 36th minute.
The first half ended 0-0 after Giraldo was sent off.
The Lakers, now down to 10 men, continued to stay composed defensively. In the 56th minute,
Jared Rimmer made a well-timed slide tackle just outside the penalty area to stop another attack from the Bonnies.
In the 68th minute, an alert Ganser cleared a goal-scoring opportunity off the line. A few minutes later he blocked two shots in rapid succession.
Conti made two more saves in 78th and 84th minute as the Lakers continued to sustain pressure.
Alvar Silva found himself with a late opportunity in the box but was caught by the defender. Silva was then sent off and the Lakers found themselves down to nine.
Rimmer, one of several defenders leaving everything on the pitch, cleared away one of the final opportunities of the match.
Conti recorded seven saves and his second shutout of the season in this 0-0 draw.
The Bonnies won the corner kick battle 9-1.
The Lakers will travel to Happy Valley this Friday, Sept 5 to face Penn State.
