BALTIMORE – The Mercyhurst women's soccer team dropped their first road contest of the 2025 season Sunday afternoon at UMBC, 1-0. Big defensive plays by Mercyhurst were not enough to stop the Retrievers after a first half goal.
The first half proved to be an equal matchup between the Lakers and the Retrievers as UMBC took three shots to the Lakers' two. The Lakers found their first chance in the third minute of play on a free kick taken by
Anamari Bosnjak, but was stopped by the Retrievers keeper.
Mercyhurst threatened the Retrievers backline throughout the first half, but a turnover by the Lakers in the midfield led to an early Retriever goal in the 13
th minute.
The early goal did not deter Mercyhurst, who turned up the intensity, finding two back-to-back dangerous chances on a breakaway opportunity and shot off the crossbar by
Mia Maruna.
The Lakers were tested in the second half, as UMBC controlled possession for most of the half, outshooting the Lakers 8-1 in the second stanza.
Adri Lika made her first save in the match just five minutes into the second half. The Mercyhurst defense stepped up and fought off UMBC, defending the six corners taken by UMBC in the second half. Mercyhurst found momentum in the last 15 minutes of the half, creating two dangerous opportunities in the box, but couldn't find the equalizer.
Maddi Cowburn,
Mia Maruna, and
Caterina Cappiello each tallied a shot for Mercyhurst.
The Retrievers led the corner kick battle 9-1.
The Lakers travel to Rochester, Michigan to take on the Oakland Thursday, Aug. 21.
