Lakers Fall in Doubleheader with Red Flash

Erie, PA – The Mercyhurst Softball team hosted the defending NEC champions, Saint Francis University, in their final home series of the season. The Red Flash proved to be too much as they won game one 7-1 and game two 10-1.

Game One
The Red Flash got off to a hot start by loading the bases early. Erie native AB Cipalla scored the first run on a wild pitch. With two runners on base, Cameryn Mullaly made a great reactionary catch on a hard hit from Aliya Garroway to close the inning. The Lakers answered right away in the bottom of the first. Emelie Pascual hit a line drive with bases loaded and Eliza Reynolds tied the game. SFU ran riot in the top of the second, adding five runs in rapid succession. The game remained 6-1 up through the sixth inning until the Red Flash scored another on an error. The Lakers were unable to get anything back as SFU took game one 7-1.

Game Two
The Red Flash picked up where they left off. AB Cipalla hit an RBI double to right center field and then the team added two more to take a 3-0 lead early. SFU recorded two more runs in the second before the Lakers got on the board. In the bottom of the second, Eliza Reynolds hit a line drive to pick up an RBI single.

In the top of the fifth, the Lakers executed a perfect 6-4-3 double play and then Karlie Kasten closed the inning with a catch in left field. However, the Red Flash responded with a perfect three pitch, three out inning to keep the score at 5-1. The Red Flash kept their momentum going by adding five more in the top of the sixth, capitalized by a 2 RBI double from Sofia Zielinski. A tough afternoon for Mercyhurst ended in a 10-1 win for SFU.
