Erie, PA – The Mercyhurst Softball team split the doubleheader against CCSU yesterday afternoon. Both games featured strong hitting and great pitching from the Lakers. However, aside from having more hits, the Blue Devils took the series after a 4-1 win today.
How it Happened
Alexa North started in the circle for the Lakers. The game started similar to game two yesterday, with the top of the Blue Devils' order being retired in quick succession. The Lakers scored first, just as they had done in both games yesterday.
Jazlynn Sanders hit an RBI double to right field that allowed
Karlie Kasten to score and make it 1-0.
The Blue Devils responded immediately, as KC Machado hit a home run to left field in her first at bat of the game. In the bottom of the third,
Karlie Kasten used her wheels to steal second and then advanced to third on an overthrow. The Lakers could not capitalize on it and the score remained level until the top of the fifth. Here, CCSU scored three runs and took a 4-1 lead off of a few errors and an RBI single from Ashley Viesta.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Lakers found themselves with bases loaded and just one out, similar to a few of the innings yesterday. However, Liz Hamilton struck out back-to-back batters to save the inning. The Blue Devils' ace finished with eleven strikeouts in what turned out to be a frustrating afternoon for the Lakers in a 4-1 loss.
