Softball Defeated by Marist & ETSU

Johnson City, TN – The Mercyhurst Softball team remains in Eastern Tennessee competing in the Buccaneer Classic. A defensive battle between Mercyhurst and Marist held up until Marist left it late to win 4-0. An offensive battle between Mercyhurst and ETSU resulted in a 10-6 victory for ETSU.

Game One
The first game between Mercyhurst and Marist University was full of excellent defending and pitching. There was only one hit in the first five innings. It was 0-0 heading into the sixth inning. Mercyhurst was unable to generate any offense in the top of the sixth. Marist got going in the bottom of the sixth. Haley Ahr stepped up to the plate, with two runners on base, and hit a bomb over right center field that broke the deadlock and put the Red Foxes up 3-0. Then, in the same inning, Sienna Kunze homered down the infield line to extend the lead to four. Mercyhurst ended up leaving two runners on base in the top of the seventh after Bailey Cannon fouled out to third base. The Red Foxes went on to win 4-0 in the first game of the day.

Game Two
The second game between Mercyhurst and East Tennessee State was very unlike the first. ETSU struck first with Taylor Suchy doubling to left field which allowed Cameron Young to score. The Lakers then scored two of their own in the top of the second with Eliza Reynolds and Jazlynn Sanders both scoring runs. ETSU scored another in the bottom of the third to make it tied 2-2.

Mercyhurst took a 4-2 lead in the top of the fourth after Mackenzie Gillis and Eliza Reynolds scored. It was in the bottom of the fifth when things began to fall apart for the Lakers. The Bucs put up six hits, eight runs, and forced the Lakers to switch pitchers three times all in one inning to give ETSU a 10-4 lead. The Lakers would get two more runs in the top of the second, but it was not enough to outlast the Bucs as they fell 10-6 in their third game of the weekend.

Highlights
Eliza Reynolds had four hits, three RBIs, and two runs in the game against ETSU.
