Erie, PA – The Softball team hosted their third and fourth game of the season to begin their series against LIU. Despite the Lakers putting up strong performances in both games, the Sharks took both games. The final score of game one was 5-2 and the second game was 4-1 after an extra inning.
Game One
LIU was off to a hot start in game one. Their scoring began with Alyssa Polemini's double to left field. The Sharks were up 4-0 after four innings. The Lakers really got their bats going in the bottom of the fourth.
Lauren Henrich stepped up to the plate and hit a bomb to left center field for her first home run of the season. This cut the deficit to three heading into the fifth.
The Lakers added another run in the bottom of the fifth.
Eliza Reynolds hit an RBI double down the third base line that brought in
Karlie Kasten. LIU added another run in the top of the sixth. Despite a few late hits by the Lakers, the Sharks took won one 5-2.
Game Two
The beginning of the game almost looked as if LIU was picking up where they left off.
Alexa North found herself with bases loaded and two outs. North ended up getting Kaylee Clarkson to swing and struck her out to leave all three runners on base.
Karlie Kasten recorded the first hit for the Lakers with a nice double through the 7-8 gap. However, the Sharks did not let anything else through them.
In the top of the second,
Eliza Reynolds was in on the defensive action. She made a tremendous throw from her back foot, deep in shortstop to throw out Jaedyn Lincoln. The first run of the game did not come until the bottom of the third.
Eliza Reynolds hit a single in the 3-4 gap and
Shailene Riemedio used her wheels to turn it into an RBI from second base. This was followed by
Karlie Kasten's beauty of a bunt,
Jazlynn Sanders getting hit by a pitch, and the bases were loaded with zero outs and the Lakers up 1-0. Somehow, the Sharks escaped this situation unscathed, and the score remained 1-0.
The game was at a deadlock until the bottom of the sixth. Here, Alyssa Garcia hit a ball that was just too high for Reynolds and Devon Medina scored as a pinch runner. Neither team could score as the game went to an extra inning at 1-1. Lily Hinkle of LIU hit a go-ahead triple off of the left field fence in the top of the eight. Then, Alyssa Garcia hit a single RBI followed by Alyssa Polemini's home run to capitalize on their riot. LIU's late rally proved to be too much for the Lakers as they took this one 4-1.
