Erie, PA – The Mercyhurst Softball team hosted their first games of the season after playing their first 16 games on the road. The Lakers beat the St. Bonaventure Bonnies 3-2 in game one and 6-5 in game two to win their two games as a Division I team.
Game One
The first real action of the game began in the bottom of the second. Here
Cameryn Mullaly singled down the left field line for the Lakers but was left on base. In the top of the third, the Bonnies got on the board first. Kymora Wang doubled to left center field which brought in Karena Recrosio to put them up 1-0. The Lakers answered right away in the bottom of the third when
Jazlynn Sanders hit a single that allowed
Shailene Riemedio to tie the game.
In the top of the fourth,
Eliza Reynolds made a great play deep in short stop to save a run and prevent the Bonnies from taking the lead. The Lakers almost went ahead in the bottom of the fifth when the bases were loaded.
Mackenzie Gillis hit a laser to second base that resulted in an out and the Bonnies escaped the inning. The Bonnies had a chance to take the lead in the top of the sixth, but
Eliza Reynolds connected with
Jazlynn Sanders for a 6-3 double play with Sanders doing a full split.
The bottom of the sixth was when the Lakers took the lead.
Lauren Henrich scored on an overthrow from the catcher and then
Jenna Wojtkowiak scored on a wild pitch. Lauren Dundon hit an RBI in the top of the seventh for the Bonnies. However, the Lakers prevailed and closed out the game to secure their first win of the season by a score of 3-2.
Game Two
In game two, St. Bonaventure was off to a strong start. They scored first on an error, then Kendall Stull singled to allow Kymora Wang to score and take a 2-0 lead in the top of the seventh. The Bonnies added another off of a wild pitch in the top of the second. The Lakers got on the scoresheet in the bottom of the third when
Jazlynn Sanders hit a homer to right center field to cut the lead to two.
The Lakers' bats really got going in the bottom of the fourth.
Eliza Reynolds hit one deep off of the fence in left center field for a two-run RBI that brought in
Shailene Riemedio and
Emelie Pascual to tie the game 3-3. After that,
Mackenzie Gillis hit a single over the second basemen that allowed
Eliza Reynolds to score and take a 4-3 lead. Eventually,
Bailey Cannon stepped up to the plate and got hit by the pitch with bases loaded. The Lakers left this inning with four runs and a 5-3 lead. The Lakers added a sixth run off of a sacrifice fly from
Eliza Reynolds that allowed
Shailene Riemedio to score.
The Bonnies added a couple more runs and had bases loaded in the top of the seventh. The Lakers escaped the inning and won this game 6-5
