2/24/2025 1:01:00 PM

St. Bonaventure, NY. – The Mercyhurst Men's Lacrosse team looks to get in the win column as they prepare for a challenging week with matchups against St. Bonaventure and Hampton. The Lakers enter the doubleheader at 0-3, following a narrow 9-8 loss to Queens (N.C.) last weekend.

Laker Outlook

Mercyhurst (0-3) has been competitive in all three games but is searching for its first win of the season. Ethan Landymore leads the team with six goals, while Jérémi Phoenix-Lefebvre has been the primary playmaker with three goals and six assists.

Defensively, Tyler Moritzen has seen the majority of time in net, making 41 saves with a 15.36 GAA. The Lakers' biggest challenge has been at the faceoff X, winning just 23.1% of draws this season, a stat they will look to improve this weekend.

Game 1: Mercyhurst vs. St. Bonaventure

Date: Tuesday, February 25th
Location: St. Bonaventure, NY
Faceoff: 4:00 PM

Scouting St. Bonaventure

The Bonnies (1-3) enter the matchup having dropped their last game, 8-7 to Robert Morris. Their lone victory came in a 9-8 road win against Mount St. Mary's. St. Bonaventure has struggled to find offensive consistency, averaging 7.62 goals per game, while allowing 13.52.

Offensively, Conor Murphy leads the Bonnies with six goals, while Kyle Pepper (4G, 4A) and Drew Kenney (4G, 3A) provide additional scoring threats. The Bonnies' man-up unit has converted at 41.2% (7-for-17), giving them a potential advantage on special teams.

In goal, Isaac Farmer has played the majority of minutes, posting a 12.72 goals-against average (GAA) and a .494 save percentage.

Keys to the Game:

  • Winning Faceoffs – St. Bonaventure is strong at the X, winning 50.5% of draws, while Mercyhurst has struggled with a 23.1% faceoff win rate.

  • Defensive Discipline – The Bonnies have capitalized on man-up opportunities, so staying out of the penalty box will be crucial.

  • Fast Start – Mercyhurst has been outscored 13-2 in the first quarter this season. A strong opening will set the tone for success.

Game 2: Mercyhurst vs. Hampton

Date: Sunday, March 2nd
Location: Hampton, Va.
Faceoff: 5:00 PM

Scouting Hampton

Hampton (0-4) has endured a tough start to the season, suffering lopsided defeats to Mercer (23-3), VMI (28-4), and Jacksonville (21-6). The Pirates are allowing 21.25 goals per game, while only averaging 5.5 goals per contest.

Offensively, AJ Knox has been their top performer with 8 goals, while Darius Stanley (4G, 3A) and Sebastian West (6A) have contributed in playmaking roles. Faceoffs have also been a challenge for Hampton, winning just 25.4% at the X.

Defensively, the Pirates have struggled, allowing 156 shots on goal in four games, with goalies LJ Collinsworth and Ben Kieu splitting time in net.

Keys to the Game:

  • Offensive Execution – Mercyhurst should look to exploit Hampton's defensive struggles and generate high-percentage scoring chances.

  • Possession Control – Hampton has turned the ball over 85 times in four games. Forcing turnovers and capitalizing in transition will be critical.

  • Depth Contributions – The Lakers will want to use this game to build chemistry across all lines and get production from multiple players.

Up Next:

Following the doubleheader, Mercyhurst will shift focus to another key non-conference matchup against Richmond.
