Rochester, N.Y. – The Mercyhurst Lakers Men's Ice Hockey team battled hard but came up short, falling 6-3 to RIT in the series finale on Saturday night at the Gene Polisseni Center. Despite a strong first two periods, the Lakers couldn't hold off a third-period surge from the Tigers.
How It Happened:
Mercyhurst struck first at 5:32 of the opening period when Will Margel buried a shot off assists from Steven Agriogianis and Boris Skalos to put the Lakers ahead 1-0. RIT responded at 8:03 with Tyler Fukakusa netting the equalizer. The teams continued to exchange goals, as Steven Agriogianis gave Mercyhurst a 2-1 lead on the power play at 14:13, but RIT answered back with a power-play goal of their own from Matthew Wilde at 19:43 to tie the game 2-2 heading into the first intermission.
In the second period, Tyler DesRochers regained the lead for the Lakers with a power-play goal at 11:26, assisted by Sean James and Ryan Coughlin, making it 3-2. However, RIT responded quickly just nine seconds later, as Crossley Stewart evened the score at 3-3.
The third period belonged to the Tigers, as Wilde struck again at 10:27, netting the game-winning goal. Tyler Mahan added an empty-netter at 18:08, and Christian Catalano sealed the victory with another goal at 19:13, making it 6-3 in favor of RIT.
