MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's hockey team continued AHA play at Robert Morris this afternoon. The Lakers scored two goals in each of the first two periods before going on to win 5-1.
Julia Schalin and
Julia Perjus both recorded three points. This marked Mike Sisti's 596th overall win and 299th conference win.
Mercyhurst (6-6-1, 3-2-0 AHA) initiated the first period with a strong offensive push by securing the opening faceoff.
Nayeon Kim capitalized on this momentum at the 15:36 mark, scoring the first goal with an assist from
Payten Evans and
Regina Metzler. This was Kim's second consecutive game with a goal. Shortly after,
Jade Maisonneuve extended the lead to 2-0, assisted by
Madison Nelson, who recorded her first career assist. RMU (5-8-0, 3-4-0 AHA) found themselves behind early on. The Lakers continued to apply pressure throughout the period, consistently testing the Colonial's with multiple attempts. The Lakers were stopped on the power play later on, but held a 2-0 lead after the first.
The Lakers opened the second period with strong defensive play, as
Magdalena Luggin made multiple saves to keep the Colonials from capitalizing on their early opportunities. During a power play at 11:21, Schalin scored her first of the game. This one was assisted by Perjus and
Abby Poitras, extending the lead to three. Later in the period, the Lakers maintained momentum as Perjus found the back of the net at 1:24, with assists from Schalin and Poitras. Perjus had now scored in three consecutive games, and the score was 4-0 after two.
Mercyhurst opened the third period with another strong faceoff win by Perjus. Although Robert Morris scored at 8:23, the Lakers quickly responded shortly after. Schalin scored her second of the game off of some great interplay by
Sophie McKinley and Perjus to restore the four-goal lead. This was Schalin's first multi-goal game of the season in her fiftieth career game with the Lakers. Throughout the period, the Colonials tried to find a way back in the game. Luggin continued to make saves to deny their chances. The Lakers prevailed and secured a 5-1 victory on the road to bring them back at .500.
Game two will take place tomorrow, Nov. 8 with a 3:00 p.m. puck drop.
