MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's hockey team played game two of their road series at RMU after winning game one 5-1. Mercyhurst got off to a strong start as they put up four in the first frame. Six different skaters scored for the Lakers as they defeated the Colonials 7-2. This marked Mike Sisti's 597th win and 300th conference win.
Mercyhurst (7-6-1, 4-2-0 AHA) started the first period by capitalizing on a power play opportunity, with
Regina Metzler scoring the opening goal at 16:42, assisted by
Payten Evans and
Sofia Nuutinen. Shortly thereafter,
Kate Donegan, scoring her first career goal, extended the lead to two. The Lakers maintained pressure, and at 7:28,
Jade Maisonneuve netted another goal to increase the advantage to 3-0. Robert Morris (5-9-0, 3-5-0 AHA) responded with a goal by at 5:34, narrowing the deficit to 3-1. However, the Lakers quickly regained momentum. Donegan struck again, scoring an unassisted goal at 1:25, concluding the period with a 4-1 lead.
The Lakers capitalized on a power play early in the second period when
Nayeon Kim scored, a goal off of passes from
Julia Schalin and
Abby Poitras.
Avery Bryk added another goal at even strength, with assists from
Jessica Ciarrocchi and
Madison Nelson, further increasing the margin. The defensive efforts, led by
Magdalena Luggin's saves, kept the Colonials from closing the gap. The period ended with the Lakers holding a 6-1 advantage.
Mercyhurst extended its lead early in the final frame with a power-play goal by
Holly VanNetten, assisted by Schalin and Kim, bringing the score to 7-1. Robert Morris responded with a power-play goal, but that was all they could salvage. The Lakers maintained control with effective defense and kept the Colonials at bay. The period continued with Mercyhurst applying offensive pressure, but RMU's netminder withstood the barrage of shots. As the clock wound down, both teams traded penalties, but no further scoring occurred. The game concluded with the Lakers securing a commanding 7-2 victory.
The Lakers return to Erie for their next series against RIT. Puck drop for game one is set for Friday, Nov 14 at 6 p.m.
