Ljung Scores Lone Goal as Women’s Hockey Falls to No. 1 Wisconsin in Smashville Showcase

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Mercyhurst women's hockey team played their final game in the NCAA Smashville Showcase. They beat Stonehill 6-1 yesterday as Head Coach Michael Sisti picked up his 600th win. Today, Mercyhurst faced No. 1 Wisconsin. The Lakers held the Badgers to just one goal in the first period and zero goals in the third. Despite Sofia Ljung scoring in the final frame, the Badgers went on to win, 5-1. Magdalena Luggin recorded a career-high 56 saves.

Mercyhurst (10-8-2, 6-3-1 AHA) began the game with the first offensive attempts. The period saw the Lakers applying early pressure, with shots from Julia Perjus and Sophie McKinley. Despite these efforts, Wisconsin (15-1-1, 10-1-1 WCHA) broke the deadlock at 11:24. Luggin was active in net with multiple saves to limit further damage. The first 20 minutes of play concluded 1-0.

The second period began with Mercyhurst's efforts to shift momentum through a faceoff win by Perjus. Despite multiple defensive saves by Luggin and a blocked shot by  Ljung, the Lakers conceded an early goal. This momentum from the Badgers set the tone for the period. The Lakers faced continuous pressure, with the Badgers extending their lead to 3-0 on a power play and 4-0 on an even-strength play. The Laker's penalty kill conceded a fifth time as this period concluded 5-0.

The final frame commenced as Mercyhurst sought to shift momentum. Early in the period, the Lakers capitalized on a power play opportunity when Ljung scored her first goal of the season. This power-play goal was assisted by Berlin Lolacher and McKinley. Despite continuous pressure, Luggin and the Laker's defense held the Badgers to a scoreless period for the first time all night. The final score ended 5-1.

The Lakers will return home to face Lindenwood for their finale series of the calendar year. Puck drop for game one will take place Friday, Dec. 5 at 5 p.m.
