ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst men's soccer hosted CCSU today as they try to keep their postseason hopes alive. The first half ended 0-0 despite several attempts to break through.
Santiago Giraldo scored two goals and
Aiden Williams McCracken added a third in the Laker's 3-1 win over the Blue Devils. The Lakers jumped from eighth to fifth place in the NEC standings.
The first half began with the Mercyhurst (3-8-4, 3-3-1 NEC) setting an aggressive tone, generating multiple shot opportunities early in the game.
Ryan Mrvcic and
Sergio Sanchez both attempted to break through, but their efforts went wide. As the half progressed,
Gonzalo Onrubia stood firm in goal, making a series of crucial saves to deny Central Connecticut State (1-12-2, 1-5-1 NEC). The Lakers maintained pressure throughout, with
Benjamin Buckley contributing to the attack, though his shot narrowly missed the target. Despite several attempts from both sides, the half concluded at a 0-0 deadlock.
The second half began with the Lakers striking first.
Alvar Silva played a nice ball over the top that Giraldo beautifully chipped over the goalkeeper. Shortly after, Silva found Giraldo again as he sat down the defender and made it 2-0. Just 30 seconds later,
Santiago Bustamante found Williams-McCracken, who rifled a shot into the back of the net for his first of the season. Central Connecticut responded in the 77th minute, but the Lakers held on to their lead and won 3-1.
The Lakers return to action this Thursday, Nov. 6 against FDU. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
