Two Lakers Record Their First Goals in 4-0 Win Over Delaware; Tara Bach Earns Second Shutout of the Season

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's hockey team hosted Delaware for game two of the first-ever matchup between the two sides. After the first half ended 0-0, the Lakers dominated for the remainder of the game and won the series with a commanding 4-0 victory.

The first period began with Mercyhurst (5-6-1, 2-2-0 AHA) winning the initial faceoff, setting a competitive tone. Despite numerous attempts, including shots from Sofia Nuutinen and Berlin Lolacher, the team was unable to capitalize early on. A power play opportunity arose after a penalty on Delaware (1-11-0, 0-8-0 AHA), but the Lakers' efforts were thwarted. As the period progressed, the Lakers continued to dominate faceoffs and applied pressure offensively, with Abby Poitras and Payten Evans among those testing the Blue Hen's defense. Tara Bach effectively guarded the net, making crucial saves to keep Delaware scoreless. The period ended without either team finding the back of the net, leaving the score tied at 0-0.

Mercyhurst took the lead early in the second period with a goal by Julia Perjus, her seventh of the season just over a minute into the period. This one was assisted by Holly VanNetten and Sophie McKinley. The momentum continued as VanNetten netted her first goal of the season to increase the lead to 2-0 at 12:07. Abby Poitras and Nayeon Kim were credited with the assists. Midway through the period, Kim netted her first goal of the season with assists from Sofia Nuutinen and Regina Metzler. Mercyhurst maintained control and closed the period with a 3-0 lead.

In the final frame, Sofia Nuutinen scored her second goal of the season at 12:06, assisted by Alenius and Metzler, to take a 4-0 win. The Lakers maintained offensive pressure throughout, consistently challenging Delaware's defense with numerous shots. Despite the Blue Hen's efforts to counter, Mercyhurst's defense held firm, preventing any goals from the opposition. The period concluded with the Lakers sustaining their four-goal advantage, securing a decisive victory. Tara Bach earned her second shutout of the season. Metzler and Perjus dominated the faceoff circle. Metzler was 14/17 and Perjus was 10/11.
