NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — The Mercyhurst women's soccer team fell to Central Connecticut State University by a score of 2-1 on Thursday evening at CCSU Soccer Field.
The first half began with Mercyhurst establishing an offensive presence early on.
Madison Sievering took a notable shot in the 13th minute, but it was saved by Central Connecticut State's goalkeeper.
Fiona Fraser followed with several attempts, but was unable to break through.
Defensively, the Lakers goalkeeper,
Rylee Kumer, made a crucial save in the 20th minute maintaining the scoreline. Throughout the half, both teams exchanged opportunities, but the defenses held strong. The half closed with the score tied at 0-0, setting up a competitive second half.
The second half began with the Lakers seizing the initiative when
Maddi Cowburn scored a header off a free kick in the 53rd minute. The goal was assisted by Sievering, putting them ahead 1-0. Kumer stood tall in net, saving a penalty kick in the 64th minute, maintaining the narrow lead for a time.
The Blue Devils responded strongly, leveling the match with a goal in the 79th minute and quickly taking the lead in the 80th minute. Despite the Lakers' efforts to equalize, including a late shot by
Tessa Peer that was saved, the half closed with CCSU holding a 2-1 advantage.
Cowburn scored one goal on her only shot, registering it as a shot on goal. Kumer made six saves while facing 22 shots over 90 minutes. Sievering provided an assist and recorded three shots, with two on target. Fraser led the team with four shots, two of which were on goal.
The Lakers will travel to Loretto, Pa. to take on SFU next Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
