A Late First Half Goal Secures a Draw for Women's Soccer

LORETTO, Pa. — The Mercyhurst women's soccer team and Saint Francis battled to a 1-1 draw on Thursday at Stokes Soccerplex, with both teams finding the net in the first half.

The first half began with both teams establishing their presence on the field. Mercyhurst created early opportunities, with Madison Sievering and Sadie Lewis both forcing saves from the Red Flash goalkeeper. Rylee Kumer stood firm in goal for the Lakers, making multiple saves to maintain the early equilibrium.

As the half progressed, the Lakers broke the deadlock in the 43rd minute with a goal by Mia Maruna, assisted by Fiona Fraser. However, Saint Francis quickly responded, leveling the score just before the break, scoring with just under 30 seconds left. The teams entered halftime tied at 1-1.

The second period commenced with both teams seeking to break the deadlock. The Lakers maintained offensive pressure, highlighted by a shot from Sievering in the 57th minute, which was saved by Saint Francis's goalkeepe. Mercyhurst continued to create opportunities, including shots by Fiona Fraser and Molly Taylor, both of which were saved.

Saint Francis countered with attempts on goal, but Kumer came up big, making several crucial diving saves to kept the score level. Despite Mercyhurst's offensive efforts and Saint Francis's defensive resilience, neither team managed to change the score. The period concluded with the scoreboard locked at 1-1, as neither side could gain an advantage.

Kumer made seven saves while facing 11 shots, allowing only one goal. Maruna's lone goal marked her first of the season. Fraser recorded an assist and added one shot on goal.

The Lakers hold a record of 1-11-3 overall and 1-4-2 in conference play. Saint Francis stands at 0-10-4 overall and 0-5-2 in conference action.

The Lakers will travel home Sunday to take on Stonehill in their Breast Cancer Awareness game at 1:00 p.m.
