ERIE, Pa. — The Mercyhurst women's soccer team (1-10-2, 1-3-1) fell to FDU (5-5-3, 5-0-0) with a 2-0 loss at Saxon Stadium on Sunday.
The first half began with the Lakers creating early opportunities, including a shot attempt by
Caterina Cappiello following a corner kick. Despite this early pressure, it was FDU who broke through first, scoring in the 22nd minute.
The Lakers defense was tested again when a second goal was scored by FDU in the 31st minute.
Rylee Kumer made a crucial save shortly before that goal to keep the scoreline from widening further. As the first half concluded, the Lakers trailed 2-0.
The second half opened with the Lakers maintaining a strong defensive stand. Kumer was pivotal, saving multiple efforts from FDU.
The Lakers generated offensive opportunities, most notably through a shot by Cappiello that was saved. Despite several corner kicks and an assertive defense, the Lakers were unable to capitalize on scoring chances.
The match ended with the Lakers unable to close the deficit, concluding at a 2-0 scoreline in favor of FDU.
Kumer finished the match with seven saves, facing a total of 22 shots. Cappiello contributed offensively with two shots, one of which was on goal.
Madison Sievering also took two shots, landing one on target.
Annabella Stoehr added pressure with one additional shot.
The Green and Blue stood at 1-10-2 overall and 1-3-1 in conference play. FDU improved to 5-5-3 overall and remained perfect in conference play with a 5-0-0 record.
The Lakers will play away at CCSU on Thursday Oct. 9.
