ERIE, Pa. — The Mercyhurst women's soccer team fell to Delaware State University 2-1 on Thursday afternoon at Saxon Stadium.
The match began with both teams eager to establish control, but it was Delaware State who struck first with a goal in the 24th minute. The Lakers responded swiftly 30 seconds later when
Madison Sievering scored with an assist from
Fiona Fraser, leveling the score at 1-1. Despite several attempts by the Lakers, including a shot by Sievering, the score remained tied at the end of the first half.
Mercyhurst faced a challenging second half as Delaware State increased their lead with an early goal by in the 50th minute. Despite several defensive efforts by freshman
Annis-Clara Wright, including multiple saves, the Lakers struggled to capitalize on their opportunities, with Fraser's shot hitting the top woodwork in the 61st minute. The half concluded with Delaware State maintaining their advantage, ending 2-1 in favor of the visitors.
Sievering scored one goal, adding to her season tally and contributing significantly to the team's performance. Fraser assisted on a crucial play, marking her impact in the match with one assist. Wright was active in goal, making five saves from 12 shots faced, ensuring a solid defensive effort.
The Lakers will travel to Chicago State next Thursday to take on the Cougars.
