ERIE, Pa. — The Mercyhurst women's soccer team secured a 1-0 victory against Le Moyne College at Saxon Stadium on Thursday, with the lone goal coming from
Meredith Swenson with three minutes left.
The first half between the Lakers and the Dolphins began with a defensive showcase from Lakers goalkeeper
Rylee Kumer, who recorded multiple key saves to keep the game scoreless. Despite Le Moyne's offensive efforts, which included several shots on target and corner kicks, Kumer's performance was pivotal in maintaining the clean sheet for the Green and Blue. As the half concluded, both teams entered halftime locked in a scoreless draw.
The second half began with the Lakers applying pressure, as
Molly Taylor and
Madison Sievering each tested Le Moyne's goalkeeper. Despite multiple attempts, the score was kept level early on. Persistence paid off for the Lakers when freshman
Meredith Swenson, assisted by Sievering, broke the deadlock with her first career goal in the 86th minute, just three minutes before the match concluded.
The Lakers' defense held firm throughout the half, with Kumer making key saves. The Lakers maintained their lead, concluding the half and the match with a 1-0 victory.
Kumer posted eight saves in her first career shutout performance, facing 15 shots. Swenson scored the game-winning goal, converting one of her two shots for the Lakers. Sievering added an assist and recorded one shot on goal.
The Lakers will conclude homecoming weekend hosting FDU on Sunday.
