Lakers Finish Twelfth in Penguin Classic

YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO – The Mercyhurst Women's Bowling team traveled to Youngstown, Ohio for the annual Chelsea Gilliam Penguin Classic, hosted by Youngstown State. The Lakers finished 12th out of 18 teams, with fierce competition being showcased throughout the weekend.
 
In Traditional competition, the Lakers managed to pull away with a win against Alabama A&M with a final of 907-871. Mackensie Livingston stood out in this matchup for the Lakers, who rolled a 201, with support coming from Nicole Lemponen and Tia Germanich, who rolled 191 and 185 respectively. The team was unable to secure wins facing the host team, Youngstown State, Sacred Heart, Coppin State, and Nebraska.
 
In Baker competition, Mercyhurst fell to Niagara in their first matchup before securing a win against Walsh by a score of 957-822. The Lakers would then fall to Valparaiso, Duquesne, and Vanderbilt in the remainder of their Baker matches. In Sunday's championship bracket, the Lakers would fall in the first round to NEC opponent Duquesne in a best best-of-seven Baker format. The Dukes would win 4-2 in the series. The Blue and Green would then face Lewis in a compensation round and win 919-867 before falling to Valparaiso to finalize their 12th place finish for the weekend.
 
The Lakers finished the weekend with a 3-10 tournament record with 11,915 pins split between Traditional, Baker, and Bracket competition. The team also scored an average of 183.3 per game.
 
Lemponen led the team in individual performances with an average of 186.4, which placed her 42nd overall in the tournament. Germanich was close behind with a 185.6 average, placing her at 44th in the tournament.
 
The Lakers will travel to Niagara for the Brunswick Fall Open November 1st.
