ERIE, Pa. — The Mercyhurst men's ice hockey team fell to Holy Cross 4-0 on Saturday afternoon.
The first period commenced with Mercyhurst facing off against Holy Cross. Despite several attempts on goal by
John Larkin and
Alexander Dimitriadis, the Lakers were unable to capitalize early in the period.
Charles-Edward Gravel made key saves to keep the score level until Holy Cross scored at 12:08, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Mercyhurst continued to press offensively, but Holy Cross extended their lead with a short-handed goal. The Lakers then ended the period on the power play following a tripping penalty, but they were unable to find the back of the net. The period concluded with Holy Cross leading 2-0.
The second period began with the Lakers seeking to capitalize on an early power play, but they were unable to convert the opportunity into a goal. Mercyhurst players
Matteo Disipio,
Kaden Muir, and
Sean James all challenged the Holy Cross goaltender early in the period, but their efforts were thwarted.
Holy Cross extended their lead to 3-0 at 7:45. Despite solid defensive efforts from the Green and Blue, including blocked shots by
Barrett Brooks,
Francesco Iasenza, and
Trent Sambrook, Holy Cross maintained pressure.
The Lakers ended the period with a power play following an interference penalty on Holy Cross, but the team was unable to find the back of the net. The period closed with Holy Cross holding a 3-0 lead.
Holy Cross increased their lead early in the third period. This goal extended Holy Cross's advantage to 4-0. The Lakers tried to respond, with shots from
Christian Kocsis and
Tyler DesRochers but they couldn't find the back of the net.
Throughout the period, Mercyhurst maintained pressure, with
Brendan Lamb winning multiple faceoffs and several attempts on goal from Larkin,
Caleb Price, and Disipio being saved by Holy Cross's goaltender. Despite consistent efforts from the Lakers' offense, they were unable to overcome the deficit, and the period concluded with Holy Cross leading 4-0, sealing the win.
Kocsis achieved a perfect face-off percentage of 100, winning both of his attempts. Price contributed offensively with one assist while recording three shots on goal. Disipio added an assist and maintained a face-off percentage of 66, winning two of his three draws. Gravel made 33 saves during his time in goal.
Mercyhurst holds an overall record of 0-5-0 and is 0-1-0 in conference play. Holy Cross has a record of 1-3-0 overall and is 1-0-0 in the conference.
The Lakers will return home next week to host UMass-Lowell in a two game series.
