ERIE, Pa. — The Mercyhurst men's ice hockey team fell to UMass Lowell 4-0 on Tuesday night, despite a 30-save effort from the Lakers' goaltender.
UMass Lowell (2-3-0) secured the win with a power-play goal and an empty-netter, while the Lakers (0-6-0) remained scoreless.
Mercyhurst began the first period by establishing control in the faceoff circle, with
Matteo Disipio winning several key draws.
Michael Chambre provided a solid defensive presence, making multiple saves to keep UMass Lowell at bay. However, UMass Lowell managed to break through with a goal in the16th minute. Later in the period UMass Lowell extended their lead with another goal at in the 18th minute. The Lakers ended the period trailing 2-0.
In the second frame, the Green and Blue showed defensive resilience but faced challenges offensively. Despite numerous attempts on goal, including shots by
Brendan Lamb and
Noah Sedore, they were unable to convert against UMass Lowell's goaltender. UMass Lowell capitalized on a power play opportunity scoring at 15:53, extending their lead to 3-0 by the end of the period. The period concluded with Mercyhurst trailing as they looked to regroup for the final frame.
Mercyhurst's third period was marked by a strong defensive effort from netminder Chambre, who made multiple saves against UMass Lowell's persistent offense. Despite the Lakers' attempts on goal, including shots from
Ryan Coughlin and Lamb, they were unable to find the back of the net. A significant moment occurred when Mercyhurst went on a power play following a penalty on UMass Lowell yet the home team failed to convert the opportunity into a goal.
As the period drew towards its conclusion, UMass Lowell capitalized on Mercyhurst's empty net strategy scoring at 18:33, extending their lead. The game ended with UMass Lowell securing a 4-0 victory over the Lakers.
Lamb excelled in face-offs, winning 10 out of 15 to achieve a 66% success rate. Chambre recorded 30 saves while allowing three goals.
Dominik Bartecko fired four shots. Coughlin took four shots throughout the game.
The Green and Blue holds an overall record of 0-6-0. UMass Lowell stands at 2-3-0 for the season.
The Lakers will finish the series facing the River Hawks Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
