ERIE, Pa. — The Mercyhurst University field hockey team put up a strong fight at Saxon Stadium but came up just short in a 2-1 loss to Fairfield. Goalkeeper Louise Pert was outstanding in net, making 25 saves to keep the Lakers within striking distance throughout the match.
Making her return as the starting keeper, Pert brought energy and stability to the Lakers' defense. After Fairfield opened the scoring, Mercyhurst answered with a goal from Delfina Magro—her first of the season—off an assist by Lola Williams, to tie the game and swing momentum back in the Lakers' favor.
The second quarter saw Mercyhurst's defense hold firm under pressure. Pert made several crucial saves, including a diving stop on a penalty shot, while Jen Kemp added a key defensive stop to keep the score level at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Lakers continued to defend fiercely, but Fairfield managed to convert on a penalty corner to take a 2-1 lead.
Mercyhurst pushed hard in the final quarter, generating chances and holding the line defensively behind more saves from Pert. Despite a late offensive surge, the Lakers couldn't find the equalizer.
Next, the Lakers travel to Loretto, Pa. to take on Saint Francis University on October 19 at 12:00PM.
