LORETTO, Pa. — The Mercyhurst University field hockey team was defeated 5-0 by Saint Francis University on Sunday at DeGol Arena. Goalkeeper Louise Pert recorded seven saves in the contest for the Lakers.
The match began with both teams playing strong defense. Pert made two early saves, helping Mercyhurst keep the game scoreless through the first quarter. The Lakers held off several corner opportunities and limited quality chances, finishing the quarter tied 0-0.
In the second quarter, Saint Francis broke the deadlock with a goal early in the period. Mercyhurst responded with a shot from Marina Evert, but it was stopped by the opposing goalkeeper. Pert continued her solid play in net, but a late goal in the quarter sent the Lakers into halftime trailing 2-0.
The third quarter featured more defensive resilience from Mercyhurst. Pert turned away multiple shots, and the defense remained organized, even while playing shorthanded following a yellow card. The Lakers prevented any scoring during the quarter, keeping the margin at two.
Saint Francis added three goals in the fourth quarter to widen the gap. Pert made another key save during the period, but Mercyhurst was unable to generate a goal despite continued effort.
The Lakers return to action on October 24 at Sacred Heart slated for a 12:00PM start.
