Men’s Soccer Stunned by Stonehill’s Late Winner

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst men's soccer team hosted Stonehill this afternoon. Last season, the two teams played to a 3-3 draw. The score was tied 2-2 until the Skyhawks netted a late goal to give them the win.

The first began with Mercyhurst (1-7-3, 1-2-1) getting on the board early. In just the third minute, Alvar Silva delivered a wonderful corner kick that found Benjamin Buckley wide open near the back post. Buckley calmly headed this one in the bottom left corner of the net for his first goal of the season. This early goal set the tone for the Lakers, who continued to apply pressure with Silva and Jared Rimmer both attempting shots on goal. Gonzalo Onrubia contributed defensively with key saves, keeping Stonehill (4-7-1, 2-1-1) from gaining momentum. Stonehill equalized in the 36th minute and the first half ended 1-1.

The second half opened with the Lakers generating multiple scoring opportunities, highlighted by shots from Silva, Buckley, and Ben Conti. Stonehill continued to apply pressure and netted their second in the 61st minute to take their first lead of the afternoon. Mercyhurst quickly responded in the 64th minute when Marcel Duffau fired a rocket into the top left corner of the net. This was Duffau's second goal of the season and it was assisted by Aiden Williams McCracken. Both sides tried to find a winner over the next 20 minutes. Onrubia made another big save to deny Stonehill from taking the lead. Meanwhile, both sides were getting anxious, leading to a few bookings. The Skyhawks eventually found a winner in the 89th minute of the match as they stunned the Lakers 3-2.

The Lakers will travel to Le Moyne this Thursday, Oct. 16 with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m.
