Three Goals not Enough for Men's Hockey Against Union

ERIE, Pa. — Mercyhurst men's ice hockey dropped their Saturday night contest 5-3 against Union.

Mercyhurst began the first period by controlling the opening faceoff and setting an early tone against Union. Despite Union's attempts to pressure the Lakers' defense, the home team effectively blocked several shots, with Trent Sambrook and Brendan Lamb making critical stops.

The momentum shifted decisively in Mercyhurst's favor when Riley Fitzgerald scored the first goal of the game at 10:29 with a helper from Matteo Disipio. Building on this momentum, the Green and Blue extended their lead to 2-0 as Will Schumacher found the back of the net at 15:38, assisted by Lukas Klemm. The Lakers maintained control, concluding the frame with a strong 2-0 lead, heading into the intermission with confidence.

The Lakers extended their lead early in the second period with a goal from Connor Pelc at 18:06, marking his first goal of the season and putting them up 3-0. The Lakers maintained robust defense throughout the period, with Michael Chambre making key saves to hold Union off the scoreboard during even-strength play.

Union managed to break through on a power play at 9:00, reducing the deficit to 3-1. Despite Union's efforts to close the gap further, Mercyhurst's defense, led by several blocked shots and saves by Chambre, kept Union from adding to their tally. The frame ended with the Lakers holding a 3-1 lead.

The third frame began with Mercyhurst holding a narrow lead over Union, 3-2. However, Union quickly shifted the momentum by scoring two consecutive goals, leveling the score and then taking a 4-3 lead. Despite Mercyhurst's attempts to regain control, the Garnet Chargers extended their advantage with another goal, shifting the game to 5-3.

As the period progressed, the Lakers made a strategic timeout and pulled the netminder to increase offensive pressure. However, this move resulted in an empty-net goal by Union, sealing the game at 5-3. The period closed with Mercyhurst unable to bridge the gap, concluding with a score favoring Union.

Riley Fitzgerald scored a goal, contributing to the team's offensive efforts. Barrett Brooks excelled in faceoffs, winning 66% of his attempts. Will Schumacher also found the back of the net with a goal. Connor Pelc added a goal on three shots. Michael Chambre made 42 saves in goal, providing a strong defensive presence for the Lakers.

Mercyhurst stood at 0-4-0 overall. Union (NY) held a record of 2-0-1.

The Lakers will return home next week for a single game against Holy Cross.
