Lakers Complete Sweep Over Saint Michael's

Erie, Pa. – The Mercyhurst Lakers Women's Ice Hockey team delivered a commanding performance on Sunday afternoon, shutting out Saint Michael's College 6-0 at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. The Lakers showcased a balanced attack, with goals from five different players, and stellar goaltending from Jorden Mattison to secure their second straight win. 

How It Happened: 

Mercyhurst opened the scoring at 15:19 of the first period when Megan McKay netted a power-play goal, assisted by Thea Johansson and Julia Schalin. Johansson followed up with an even-strength tally at 16:51, extending the lead to 2-0. Vanessa Upson capped the first period with another power-play goal in the final seconds, assisted by Schalin and McKay. 

The Lakers added to their lead in the second period with another power-play goal from Upson at 8:21, set up by McKay and Sydney Pedersen

In the third period, Mercyhurst sealed the victory with two more goals. Kylee Mahoney scored an even-strength goal at 16:38, assisted by Johansson and Sofia Nuutinen, and Emmi Mourujärvi added her first goal of the season at 17:08, with helpers from Regina Metzler and Marielle Parks

Notable Performances: 

  • Vanessa Upson recorded two goals and led all skaters with 11 shots on net. 

  • Megan McKay tallied a goal and two assists, contributing to three of the Lakers' six goals. 

  • Thea Johansson notched a goal and two assists, continuing her strong offensive production. 

  • Jorden Mattison earned the shutout with 10 saves, anchoring Mercyhurst's defensive effort. 

Up Next: 

Mercyhurst (9-11-1) will return to Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) action next weekend with a two-game road series against Syracuse. Puck drop for Friday's game is set for 6 PM.
