Erie, Pa. – The Mercyhurst Lakers Women's Ice Hockey team overwhelmed the Saint Michael's Purple Knights in an 11-1 rout on Friday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. The Lakers used a balanced attack, with goals from ten different players, to secure their eighth win of the season.
How It Happened:
Mercyhurst took control early, with Makayla Javier opening the scoring at 11:31 of the first period. Assisted by Vanessa Upson and Sofia Ljung, the Lakers carried a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
The second period saw Mercyhurst extend their lead to 4-0 with goals from Avery Norman, Ashley Mandeville, and Sofia Nuutinen, the latter coming on the power play. The Lakers' offense was relentless, putting 17 shots on net in the period.
The onslaught continued in the third period, with Megan McKay, Julia Schalin (shorthanded), and Regina Metzler scoring back-to-back goals to push the lead to 8-0. After Saint Michael's broke the shutout with a goal from Anna Nelson at 12:38, Mercyhurst responded with three more goals, including a power-play tally by Thea Johansson with two seconds remaining.
