Box Score Staten Island, NY.- The Lakers had been searching for anything to give them spark in the past month. They finally found it on Saturday afternoon in their 69-65 comeback win over Wagner. The Lakers, who trailed by eight points at the half, grabbed their first road NEC win and second conference win of the season.
Â
How it Happened:
Both sides experienced slow starts as they combined for just 11 points in the first five minutes of action. In the first six minutes of action, Mercyhurst was only able to knock down one field goal shot. But Senior
Aidan Reichert broke that slump with a three pointer that knotted the game seven a piece. Reichert knocked down Mercyhurst's first three shots from the field and accounted for seven of their first nine points. The first half, which was seemingly even the entire way throughout, was ended with 7-0 run from Wagner to give themselves a 30-22 lead at the break.
Â
But it was Mercyhurst who came out hot in the second half, while Wagner was unable to hit a shot from the field for the first four and a half minutes of the period. In that time, Mercyhurst scored 12 points to draw the match back to even. After a
Shemar Rathan-Mayes three pointer with just under 13 minutes to go, the Lakers held the lead until one minute was left in regulation. Zae Blake hit a jumper that helped Wagner earn a short lived one point lead. 30 seconds later, Blake fouled Reichert on the opposite end and Reichert hit both free throws to take back the lead for good. Reichert, who had another great performance, sealed the deal with another free throw to give Mercyhurst their 69-65 win with just five seconds to go.
Highlights:
Mercyhurst created some momentum with their big win over Wagner on the road. Reichert was key in their win as he scored 22 points and grabbed eight boards. Mercyhurst also found some solid shooting, hitting on nearly half of their shots.
Bernie Blunt III, Rathan-Mayes and
Jeff Planutis also scored double-digit points and combined the four missed just two free throws. They were 20-22 from the charity stripe and they'll look to carry their play into Monday when they finish out their four game road trip.
Â
Next Game:
