Lakers Drop Match at Canisius

Buffalo, NY. - The Mercyhurst Volleyball team finished up a tournament yesterday in which they went 1-1 and now they traveled up the road to Buffalo for a matchup with Canisius.  The Griffins and Lakers battled but it was the Griffins who came away with a 3-0 win.

How it Happened

The Giffins took an early 15-3 lead in set one, but a kill followed by a service ace by Brice Hansen killed the Griffins momentum.  The Lakers continued to battle in set one, cutting into the Griffins lead.  A kill by Sarah Barnum made it 23-14.  An error by the Griffins gave the Lakers another point, but the next two points were scored by the Griffins, and they took set one 25-15.

Early in set two, the Griffins took a 6-1 lead.  The Lakers went on a quick 5-0 run to tie the set up at six.  The Griffins started to pull away in set two, making the score 18-12, before going on a 7-3 run to end set two, taking it 25-16.

A kill by Andrea Zaric tied set three up at eight.  Zaric picked up another kill, giving the Lakers the lead and Jessica Wilson followed up with one of her own to extend that lead.  A few points later, Kaitlin Murphy got in on the action with a kill, while Jessica Wilson picked up another kill.  The Lakers were rolling in set three, holding a 15-11 lead. After a run by the Griffins that gave them the lead, Lilliana Mook found an opening for a kill to tie the set up at 20. The Lakers scored two points to make it 22-20, but the Griffins went on a 5-0 run to close out the set and the match.

Jessica Wilson and Lilliana Mook tied for the team lead in kills with seven.  Alia Mastromatteo led the Lakers in assists with twelve.  Kaitlin Murphy and Sarah Barnum each finished with two blocks in the loss.
