Erie, Pa – The Mercyhurst Women's Ice Hockey team looked for a bounce back performance in game two of their weekend series with #4/#6 Colgate. The Lakers grabbed a 4-3 win in overtime on a Makayla Javier game-winner.
How it Happened
Early in the first period, the Lakers came out firing shots on net. Colgate put pressure on the Lakers and spent a lot of time in their defensive zone, but the Lakers defense stood strong. After a tripping penalty on the Lakers, Colgate went on the powerplay. The Lakers were able to kill off the penalty and keep the game tied at zero. With about two minutes remaining in the first period, the Lakers took an interference penalty. Colgate responded just 10 seconds into the powerplay and found the back of the net for the powerplay goal. Time expired and Colgate led 1-0 at the end of the first period.
The Lakers flipped a switch after the first period and started putting pressure on Colgate's defense to start the second. Early in the second period, Colgate took a slashing penalty, but the Raiders killed the Lakers powerplay. A few seconds after the powerplay ended, Marielle Parks found the back of the net for her first goal of the season, assisted by Henlee Mahoney. At the second intermission, the Lakers and Raiders were tied at one.
Early in the third period, the Raiders tucked one and made it 2-1. The Lakers fired on all cylinders, looking to tie the game back up. Ten minutes down in the third period, and the Raiders were still in the lead 2-1. After a big scrum in front of Colgate's net, Megan McKay comes up from the defense and snipes it top left corner for her first of the year. A huge momentum boost for the Lakers with about eight minutes remaining the score was tied up 2-2. The Lakers kept their foot on the gas as Chantal Ste-Croix puts one in the back of the net for her first goal of the season. The Raiders took a penalty giving the Lakers a man advantage for two minutes. Colgate killed the Lakers power play, and the Lakers still in the lead 3-2 with about three minutes to play. Colgate responded with late goal, which tied tied the game at 3-3 with about a minute remaining. After regulation, the game headed into overtime.
The Lakers and Raiders played a little 3 on 3 hockey in overtime. The Lakers made a rush toward the net as Thea Johansson put a shot on the net, it bouced off the goaltenders blocker and it found the stick of Makayla Javier, who buried the puck in the net for the OT winner.

Tristana Tatur finished with a pair of assists.
The Lakers had eight different players record a point in the win.
Jorden Mattison finished with 20 saves, including three big ones in OT.
