St. Cloud, MN – The Mercyhurst Women's Ice Hockey team traveled to the land of 10,000 lakes for a matchup with St. Cloud State University. The Lakers fell to the Huskies 2-1 on a late goal in the third period.
How it Happened
Early in the first period, the Huskies pressured Mercyhurst, but the Lakers stayed strong and were able to block a number of shots. Megan McKay attempted a wraparound shot, as the Lakers started to find their groove about five minutes in. Halfway through the first, the Huskies took a tripping penalty. The Huskies killed the Lakers powerplay, and the score remained 0-0. After a back and forth first period, the game remained scoreless.
Just about two minutes into the second period, the Huskies found the back of the net, making it 1-0. Jorden Mattison bounced back and made back-to-back big saves to keep the score where it was. At the halfway mark, the Lakers took a tripping penalty. The Lakers killed the Huskies powerplay, and the score remained 1-0 St. Cloud. Just like the first period, it was a back-and-forth game, as the Lakers looked to tie the game up. Late in the second period, Regina Metzler found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal, assisted by Sofia Nuutinen and Mary Sweetapple. Time expired and the score remained 1-1.
After a huge momentum boost to end the second period, the Lakers looked to take the lead. Two minutes into the third period, the Huskies took a tripping penalty. St. Cloud was able to kill the Lakers powerplay. Seven minutes into the third, Mercyhurst took a body checking penalty, but the Lakers killed the Huskies powerplay, and the score remained tied 1-1. Late in the period, St. Cloud put one in the back of the net to take a late 2-1. Time expired and the Huskies walked away with a 2-1 win.
