Lakers Fall in Three to Maryland Eastern Shore

Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst Volleyball team looked for a bounce back performance after dropping their season opener last night to Maryland Eastern Shore.  The Lakers battled throughout but ended up falling to the Hawks 3-0.

How it Happened

The Hawks took the first set by a score of 25-22.  After the Hawks jumped out to a 10-8 lead, Esra Akcay served for four straight Laker points and gave the Lakers a 12-10 lead.  The Hawks were able to regain the lead late in the set.  A kill by Abby Miller and a service ace by Sarah Barnum got the Lakers to within two, but the Hawks closed out set one with a kill.

Andrea Zaric got the scoring started for the Lakers in the second set with a kill.  Midway through the second set, Esra Ackay picked up a kill to bring the Lakers to within one, 14-13.  The Hawks pulled away towards the end of the set, but the Lakers fought their way back.  Alia Mastromatteo picked up a service ace and Jessica Wilson picked up a kill.  The Hawks were too much as they won set two by a score of 25-19.

Set three was back and forth.  A short run by the Lakers gave them a 10-6 lead early in the set.  The Hawks went on a run of their own to tie it up at 10.  Late in the set, the Hawks held a 22-19 lead.  Andrea Zaric picked up a kill to get the serve back for the Lakers.  Zaric picked up two more points off service aces and the Lakers took the lead 23-22.  The Hawks scored the next three points on took the set 25-23.
