Lakers Sweep Millersville in Regional Opener

Edinboro, Pa. - In the opening round of the NCAA Atlantic Regional, Mercyhurst men's tennis grabbed the win over the Marauders. It was a dominant day for the Lakers on the court as they managed to win via a sweep, 4-0, to get some revenge on Millersville for their previous contest.

How it Happened

The Lakers came out strong in doubles play, picking up wins one each of the first two bouts to help them claim the first win of the match. It was Danylo Rekun and Colm Schultz who got things started with the pairing coming way with a 6-2 win to set the tone as the top team in doubles play. They were followed by Ben Davis and Lukas Cabue Valverde who finished with a win of their own, 6-4, to make it 1-0 in favor of the Lakers.

Cabue Valverde got back to work in singles play with the first win for Mercyhurst. He played as the team's number two and came away with a convincing win as he ended up with the 6-2, 6-3 win. He was followed by Colm Schultz who had a similarly easy time with his counterpart. The Laker's number two worked his way to a 6-2 win in the opening set before coming away with a 6-3 victory in the second to make it a 3-0 advantage for the Lakers. Ben Davis finished things out for Mercyhurst to help his team move on. The graduate student dominated in his opening set 6-2 before coming away with a 7-6 victory in the second to secure the sweep.

Mercyhurst moves on to see the host, Edinboro, tomorrow with the two teams set to battle at 12:00 p.m. for a chance to move onto the NCAA National Tournament in Sanlando Park, Fl.
