Women’s Tennis Drops Mid-Week Matchup with Rock

4/16/2024 6:57:00 PM

Slippery Rock, Pa. - Mercyhurst women's tennis did not get the new week started off the way they had hoped as they ended up falling to Slippery Rock. The Lakers fought hard in their matchup with SRU, but ultimately fell 6-1.

How it Happened

Doubles play saw the Rock grab each of the first two contests, helping them earn their first point. It was a pair of 6-0 losses for the Lakers at the three and two spots before a 6-4 win from Kayla Dean and Roisin Murphy helped the team salvage some momentum, but not enough for the win.

Singles play was more of the same with SRU taking five of the six bouts, each finishing in straight sets. Dean was the first to fall she was defeated 6-2, 6-4 while the Rock managed to add onto their lead and make it 3-0 after a 6-2, 6-1 at the six spot. The Lakers were able to grab a win at number four as Sara Bertolez Puente ended up dominating in her contest. The junior worked her way to a dominant first set, 6-1 before her competition gave more of a fight the second time around, but was not enough as Bertolez Puente won 6-4. Her effort did not provide the momentum the team needed, though, to spark a rally for Mercyhurst in the 6-1 decision.

Next Match

Mercyhurst stays on the road for a pair of matches this weekend with the team first seeing Bloomsburg on Friday, April 19th, before going to see the Golden Bears of Kutztown the following day to wrap up the road portion of their regular season schedule.
