Erie, PA- The Mercyhurst softball team welcomed the Vulcans of CalU this afternoon for an early week doubleheader. After dropping two games earlier this year, the Lakers responded in a huge way, by completing the doubleheader sweep, winning game one 3-2, and game two, 6-1.
How it Happened:
Game One
Bailey Cannon got the start in game one. She kept the Vulcan bats quiet through the first two innings and helped herself in the bottom of the 2nd with a leadoff single. She was stranded on third as the game remained scoreless heading into the third inning. The Vulcans pushed across a run in the top of the third to take a 1-0 lead. CalU added to their lead in the 4th as the score became 2-0.
The Lakers responded in the bottom half of the 5th with three runs of their own. Neena Pietropaolo hit a line drive single up the middle and scored on a triple off the bat of Madison Fry-Fachet. Fry-Fachet then tied the game on a fielder's choice, 2-2. The 5th inning magic didn't stop there as Eliza Reynolds cleared the bases with a left center gap shot to make the score 3-2, which held for a final score.
Bailey Cannon pitched 4.2 innings, allowed 5 hits and struck out 2. Alexa North shut the door and threw 2.1 scoreless innings, while striking out 4. Eliza Reynolds went 2-3 from the plate, which included an RBI double. Madison Fry-Fachet added an RBI triple in the win.
Game Two
Morgan Hilty started game two for the Lakers and gave up an early run to the Vulcans in the 1st inning. The Lakers responded yet again in the next inning, knotting the game at 1-1 thanks to a Brynna King RBI walk, which scored Brianne Egelston.
Brianne Egelston's hot bat didn't cool off as she singled again in the 4th to spark a 2-run inning, which featured RBI singles from Neena Pietropaolo and Madison Fry-Fachet. It was more of the same in the 5th inning as Mercyhurst plated 3 more runs to make the score 6-1 thanks to hits off the bats of Francesca Latino and Neena Pietropaolo.
Aside from the 1st inning run, Morgan Hilty had her way with the Vulcan offense, throwing a complete game. Eliza Reynolds continued her hot hitting with another multi-hit game. Brianne Egelston also came up big for the Lakers with three hits of her own. Brynna King and Neena Pietropaolo also recorded 2 RBI's in the victory.
